“Hello WIB Africa, meet our star scientist for October, Dr. Mkunde Chachage. She is a Biomedical Researcher at the National Institute for Medical Research-Mbeya Medical Research Center (NIMR-MMRC) in Tanzania. She completed her PhD in International Health- Immunology at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich-Germany in 2013. Dr. Chachage is interested in human immune responses to infectious diseases. Over the past six years, she has studied and published on immunologic interactions between HIV and other pathogens. As part of her PhD project, she investigated the immune-alterations caused by HIV and helminth infections and the effect of treating for helminths in reducing HIV acquisition and disease progression. She currently leads efforts to characterize human specific immune responses against Human Papillomavirus (a virus related to almost all cases of cervical cancer) in relation to cancer of the cervix, HIV infection and treatment. Her goal is for her work to add up to the knowledge that will ultimately lead to the development of novel /improved diagnostic and therapeutic tools for tackling diseases of importance in Africa. Congratulations Dr. Chachage, WIB-Africa is proud of you!” – https://www.facebook.com/groups/wibioghana/permalink/983769095013957/?pnref=story
